GENERAL INFORMATION
Mission and Program Educational Objectives
Consistent with the mission of the University, the mission of the Department of Engineering Technology is to produce two-year and four-year graduates with the breadth and depth of knowledge in engineering technology to become lifelong productive members of the regional workforce and the local society. The Electronics Technology program has four educational objectives as follows:
Program Overview
Electronic technicians work with engineers and technologists as a team. They do the actual wiring of prototypes, make test, and report the results. They are called upon to do troubleshooting, components replacement, and maintenance.
Career Information
Electronics is a career with a future. Electronics is involved in our work, home, and our entertainment. Each year it becomes more significant as the technology grows.
The Two Year Program
The Electronics Technology program prepares students to enter a number of areas of the field as technicians. They are instructed in both theory and application. Laboratory work is emphasized, so that a student is well versed in using test equipment and doing diagnostic work. This program is unique in that course work taken can be transferred to the four year Electronics Engineering Technology program if the student desires to pursue the four year degree. In fact, many of our two-year students elect to remain in school and earn the Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics Engineering Technology.
Employment
Opportunities for employment are plentiful. Salaries are quite good when compared to other two year associate degree programs.
IEEE
Electronics students are encouraged to join the student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. The IEEE is the international professional organization for engineers. Membership is recognized by virtually all employers. The chapter makes several trips a year to visit local and regional industry. On the trips, the students gain an appreciation for the electronics industry and are able to meet potential employers and other professionals who are practicing in the field. These trips are frequently hosted by NSU electronics graduates.
